Begin ESM using Lifesaver 101’s Rules of 123 & ABC
-
- Place the casualty in a comfortable resting position.
- Call 9-1-1! This is a medical emergency.
- Look for the FAST signs and relay this information to 911
- ask the casualty to smile (Facial droop)
- ask the casualty to lift both arms out in front of them and hold for 10 seconds (Arm Drift)
- ask the casualty to talk to you (Speech difficulties)
- Note the time signs and symptoms of stroke began (Time)
- Reassure the casualty and keep them warm.
- Do not assist with medications, leave this to the medical professionals who can determine the cause of the stroke
- Provide ongoing care “TREAT FOR SHOCK AND MONITOR THE ABC’s”
- If the casualty loses consciousness and stops breathing, start CPR with compressions.
